About Sonja Blum, M.D., Ph.D.
Since early in life, I have been interested in understanding memory as a crucial brain function defining individual and collective identity. This led me to focus my research on mechanisms of long-term memory and to work with patients who have memory problems secondary to dementias, traumatic brain injuries and other acquired neurological disorders. Care of patients has always felt as a natural destiny to me. Every patient has their own unique situation, and I enjoy getting to know each patient and taking a closer look so we don’t miss anything in their care. I work with my patients to focus and plan on how to improve their quality of life, achieve their goals and enjoy life despite any limitations. Furthermore, in this era of emerging biomarkers for early detection of risks, we can work on prevention and risk modification with those individuals who are concerned about future risk of dementias. I am committed to cognitive neurology care, both in the clinic and to developing innovative treatments through clinical trials.
Dr. Blum is an Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology and Associate Attending at New York Presbyterian/³ûÖÊÓƵ Medical College, and the Director of Memory Disorders and Cognitive Neurology Division at ³ûÖÊÓƵ. Dr. Blum sees adults of all ages who are having memory, attention, language, and other cognitive concerns, or who have a family history of dementia and concerned about their risks. Dr. Blum also has expertise in traumatic brain injury (TBI), including recovery from disorders of consciousness (DOC) and the long-term effects of moderate to severe TBI, as well as concussions. Her research focuses on mechanisms of cognitive aging and long-term memory dysfunction, and traumatic brain injury. Dr. Blum trained as a physician scientist completing the MD/PhD program at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston. She completed her neurology residency and behavioral neurology fellowship at the Columbia University Neurological Institute in New York City.
